Children's Hospital - Maverick

Sumners has recently finished the Post Production on the ITV1 series 'Children's Hospital' for Maverick Television.

The series was shot almost entirely on location at the brand new Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and gave an insight into the lives and struggles of the patients and the staff who worked there.

The decision was taken to shoot the series entirely tapeless and this provided a number of challenges for the Sumners engineering department. Paul, one of Sumner's senior engineers, was wholly responsible for managing the tapeless workflow throughout the duration of the project.

On a day-to-day basis Paul received up to 200 GB worth of XDCAM footage and ensured that it was backed up to both a storage server and LTO data tape.

All the material was then transcoded via AMA into a workable resolution for the offline edits. Even with the amount of footage that we received on a daily basis Paul was still expected to turn it around in a relatively short space of time due to the fast pace of filming at the hospital.

The series was highly praised and received very good viewing figures despite going up against such a ratings heavyweight as Eastenders.

“Sumners were a joy to deal with from start to finish. It was nerve wracking contemplating a new series with new cameras and a new tapeless workflow. But the team at Sumners were well prepared and organised throughout. The post process was flawless. We can’t wait to work with them again soon.”
