I'm In A Rock n Roll Band! - BBC
SumCreative have recently produced over 50 bespoke animations for BBC Music Entertainment’s new series “I’m In A Rock n Roll Band!”
The graphic novel inspired sequences illustrate specific moments in the lives and careers of the many and varied rock stars featured in the series.
Creative director Paul Peppiate commissioned comic book artists Steve Beaumont, Mike Collins and Leigh Gallagher to produce over 250 master illustrations. As well as capturing accurate likenesses the illustrations had to bring to life a unique perspective to some of the weird and wonderful stories being depicted in the series.
The illustrator’s raw artwork was subsequently combined with scratch built background environments and composited in After Effects. SumCreative designers Al O’Brien, Ant Scott and Lynn Tidsey completed the 50 plus animations, complete with all the effects and grading work.
The team worked closely with the production based in London, receiving and delivering briefs, treatments, rough cuts, approvals and final output via Sumner’s on-line Preview Theatre facility.
SumCreative also designed the titles and provided artwork and animation for the website accompanying the series.
“The drawings commissioned from some of Britain's top illustrators and animated by Sumcreative using After Effects were an integral part of the I'm In A Rock'n'Roll Band! series. These animated elements were used in the show to 'illustrate the unillustratable' - whether it was formative childhood incidents or backstage tales that happened far away from the cameras.
The production drew up storylines which were storyboarded by the graphics team, who then briefed the illustrators and animated the inked sketches that they produced.
Working at speed through over fifty scenarios, the Sumners team mixed unstinting creativity with serious stamina - and the icing on the cake was seeing massive versions of some of the illustrations forming the studio set for the live final show.”
